Kien Giang College is the new name of Kien Giang Economic and Technical College following the decision of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs to merge Kien Giang Community College into Kien Giang Economic and Technical College. Although renamed, the institution proudly preserves more than 60 years of tradition in human resource training and development. Today, the college is one of the province’s key educational institutions, consistently pioneering innovative training goals and modern teaching methods that effectively meet the demands of society, learners, and the labor market.

Over the years, Kien Giang College has continuously strengthened its position within the educational system and throughout the province. Through various stages of mergers and institutional upgrades, the college has undergone several name changes. Looking back on its proud history allows us to appreciate the remarkable journey of its establishment and development.

  • The predecessor of Kien Giang College was Kien Giang Technical Secondary School. Construction began in 1964 on a 3-hectare campus located along Interprovincial Road No. 8 connecting Rach Gia and Ha Tien (currently Mac Cuu Street, Rach Gia Ward). The school was officially established in 1965 under Decree No. 1110/GD/PC/NĐ dated July 30, 1965 issued by the Ministry of Culture and Education. The school was completed and officially commenced operations in April 1966 with four training majors: electrical engineering, carpentry, mechanical engineering, and garment tailoring, enrolling a total of 102 students.
  • After the reunification of Vietnam in 1976, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 101-TTg dated March 6, 1976, transferring the school to the Ministry of Fisheries under the new name Rach Gia Technical Secondary School. Three months later, under Decision No. 354-TTg, the school was reassigned to the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province to continue training technical workers to meet local economic development demands. The school also guided high school students in technical studies according to the Ministry of Education’s curriculum.
  • In 1977, the Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 08 dated January 11, 1977, transferring the school to the Department of Industry (currently the Department of Industry and Trade of Kien Giang Province) and renaming it Kien Giang Technical Workers School. Its mission was to train industrial technical workers for the province.
  • On March 21, 1988, under Decision No. 205/QĐ-UB, the school was renamed Electromechanical Technical Workers School.
  • In 1989, according to Decision No. 479/QĐ-UB dated June 13, 1989, issued by the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province, three institutions — the Transportation School, Construction Technical Workers School, and Electromechanical Technical Workers School — were merged into a single institution named Kien Giang Technical Workers School. The school specialized in training technical professions such as mechanics, construction, and driver training.
  • In 1995, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province issued Decision No. 1360/QĐ-UB to transfer the school from the Department of Industry to the Department of Education and Training, effective January 1, 1996. At that time, the campus covered 23,326 square meters. The organizational structure included the Board of Directors, three administrative departments, seven professional divisions, 61 staff members and lecturers, and four training systems: technical worker training, vocational secondary education, driver training, and continuing education, serving 1,044 students.
  • In 1997, under Decision No. 373/QĐ-UB, the school was upgraded to Kien Giang Economic and Technical Secondary School. In addition to its traditional technical disciplines, the school expanded into economics-related programs, attracting many female students and contributing significantly to the province’s workforce in economics and finance.
  • On February 28, 1998, the Provincial People’s Committee issued Decision No. 393/QĐ-UB ranking the school as a Grade-I institution. In November 1998, the Department of Education and Training transferred state management responsibilities for vocational education to the Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs under Decision No. 67/1998/QĐ-TTg dated March 26, 1998 of the Prime Minister. Despite the administrative transfer, the school continued its technical worker training programs.
  • On March 16, 2006, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision No. 2951/QĐ-BGD&ĐT establishing Kien Giang Economic and Technical College based on Kien Giang Economic and Technical Secondary School. The college was assigned the mission of training and fostering students at college level and below, while conducting scientific research to support the socio-economic development of the province.
  • In 2018, according to Decision No. 1523/QĐ-LĐTBXH dated September 27, 2017 of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, Kien Giang Community College was merged into Kien Giang Economic and Technical College, which was subsequently renamed Kien Giang College. Mr. Nguyen Minh Quan was appointed Principal of the college in August 2018.

Currently, Kien Giang College operates multiple training campuses located in Rach Gia City (425 Mac Cuu Street and 217 Chu Van An Street), Hon Dat Commune, Chau Thanh Commune of An Giang Province, and student dormitories accommodating up to 1,000 students located on Le Thi Hong Gam Street and 11 To Hien Thanh Street.
